2019-12-10

(Correspondent: Zhou Xing) From December 1 to 4, the 7th World Hallyu Conference was held in Jerusalem, Israel. The conference was hosted by the World Association for Hallyu Studies and undertaken by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The theme of the conference was cross-cultural enigma -- global spread of Hallyu. Professor Yuan Xin was invited to attend the conference and was entrusted to organize the sub-forum of China and South Korea population situation.

In the forum, professor Yuan Xin delivered a speech on the topic of the two-way changes of overseas students in higher education in China and South Korea and presented the results of the paper. The paper done by professor Yuan Xin and PhD student Jin Niu, mainly reviews the development of higher education in China and South Korea, as well as the evolution of exporting and receiving overseas students in higher education, since China's reform and opening up, especially since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and South Korea in 1992, comprehensively presents the trend of the two-way changes of overseas students in higher education between the two countries. It is believed that China and South Korea are geographically close, culturally connected and economically connected. They have long been the largest country of origin of overseas students of each other, and the two-way exchange of overseas students leads to education overseas consumption service trade, which is one of the important forms of bilateral economic and trade cooperation. At present, China is the largest trading partner of South Korea, while South Korea is the third largest trading partner of China. To deepen economic and trade cooperation from the perspective of education service trade, the two countries need to strengthen supply-side reform of higher education, improve the quality of education and optimize the supply structure of education overseas consumption service trade. This process is also conducive to promoting the steady transformation of demographic dividend from resource-based to capital-based with education as the wing, improving the level of human capital of the two countries and realizing the sustainable development of education and economy and trade.

It is reported that the World Association for Hallyu Studies was launched in 2012 and established in 2013, with the purpose of building a research platform for Hallyu and promoting academic exchange and cooperation in cross-cultural context. Since the first World Hallyu Conference was held in 2013, the association has successfully held seven grand events around the world, attracting numerous experts and scholars engaged in interdisciplinary research. This conference will help establish academic links of population economics research between our college and the World Association for Hallyu Studies, broaden the channels and improve the level of interdisciplinary research.
