(Correspondent: Wang Tianjian) From April 27th to May 2nd, 2024, Professor Li Jianmin of our school attended the first session of the conference entitled “The Earliest and the Oldest: 2024 China-France International Conference on Population Ageing” held at Sorbonne University, Paris, and participated in relevant academic exchanges. The theme of this session is “China’s Population Ageing: Human and Social Aspects”. At the conference, Professor Li Jianmin made a speech entitled “The Paradox of China’s Low Fertility Rate and Policy Responses”, during which he analyzed the underlying reasons for China’s extremely low fertility rate from economic, social, and institutional perspectives, and had in-depth discussions with French scholars.
Held on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and France, and as an important event of the “China-Europe Civilization Forum”, this conference received support from the French Embassy in China. The conference was jointly organized by Sorbonne University, Paul-Valéry Montpellier University, and Renmin University of China. The co-organizers include the Sino-French Institute, the Institute of Gerontology, and the Population Development Studies Center of Renmin University of China, as well as the French Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology and other institutions. During the conference and relevant academic activities, scholars from China and France had in-depth discussions and made wide exchanges on topics such as population ageing, low fertility rate, elderly care, and family issues. The second session of the conference will be held in November, 2024, at the Suzhou Campus of Renmin University of China, where Chinese and French scholars will make further academic exchanges on issues including population ageing in France.
