Two Professors Attended the Glasgow-Nankai International Workshop on Trade, Productivity and Development at the University of Glasgow

(Correspondent: Zhong Yiming) From September 3rd to 4th, 2024, Professor Wang Yongjin and Professor Wen Dongwei, two faculty members of our school, attended the Glasgow-Nankai International Workshop on Trade, Productivity and Development held at the University of Glasgow in the UK.They presented their research papers at the conference.

On the afternoon of September 3rd, Professor Wang Yongjin presented his working paper titled “Search Cost and Elusive Distance Elasticity in International Trade” and engaged in discussions with experts and scholars from institutions such as the University of Hong Kong, King’s College London, the University of Birmingham, the University of Glasgow, the University of New South Wales, Kobe University, the University of Munich, and the Peterson Institute for International Economics. This paper theoretically examines the uncertain impact of declining search costs due to advancements in digital technology on the geographic elasticity of international trade and provides relevant empirical evidence.

On the morning of September 4th, Professor Wen Dongwei presented his working paper titled “Industrial Undertaking and Export Quality: Evidence from China’s National Industrial Transfer Demonstration Zones” and discussed it with experts from institutions like the University of Hong Kong, King’s College London, the University of Birmingham, the University of Glasgow, the University of New South Wales, Kobe University, and the University of Munich. The paper examines the impact of China’s industrial transfer demonstration zones policy on the upgrading of export product quality.

The conference featured presentations from over ten distinguished economists from around the world, including Professor Deng Xiwei from the University of Hong Kong, Professor Frederic Warzynski from the University of Munich, and Professor Tong Jiandong from Nankai University. The experts shared their latest research on international trade, productivity, and economic development. The successful event promoted cultural exchange and collaboration between China and the UK, contributing to the advancement of international economic research.
