2024-10-23

(Correspondent: Zhong Yiming) On the afternoon of October 18, 2024, Dr. Diogo Geraldes, Assistant Professor at the School of Economics, University College Dublin, Ireland, was invited to give a lecture titled “Closing the Gender Gap in Multilateral Negotiations Through Institutional Design.” The lecture was hosted by Assistant Professor Xu Xue and attended by our teachers including Meng Jingyi, Qiao Liang, Yu Mengxing, Zhu Feng, and Zhou Yihang, as well as teacher Zou Wenbo from the Institute of State Economy, along with several graduate students.

Dr. Diogo Geraldes began his talk by presenting the results of four experimental group comparisons: women’s incomes were significantly lower than men’s in male-majority bargaining, while no significant gender differences in incomes were found in all-male versus all-female and female-majority bargaining. He then outlined three possible reasons for this phenomenon and designed three interventions to test whether they could reduce or even eliminate the income gender gap. Participating students and faculty engaged in a thorough discussion with Dr. Geraldes regarding the implementation details of the experiment, perspectives on data analysis, and explanations of the underlying mechanisms.

Dr. Diogo Geraldes received his PhD in Economics from Maastricht University in the Netherlands in 2018 and is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of Economics, University College Dublin, Ireland. His main research areas include behavioral economics, experimental economics, and game theory, with a focus on studying the motives and incentives behind behavior in economically relevant environments to help design policies that enhance social welfare. His research results have been published in journals such as Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Dr. Geraldes’ visit further strengthened the relationship between the School of Economics at Nankai University and University College Dublin, building a bridge for future academic exchanges and cooperation, as well as visits between faculty and students.
